Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting



I had an idea for a combat system while out for a jog. I've also been rereading Kill 6 Billion Demons. I sat down and barfed this out.

REACH HEAVEN THROUGH VIOLENCE

This is obviously unfinished and a first draft. There are no character creation rules, as such. You can test it out by giving everybody any 3 techniques they want and seeing what happens. 

I think there's something salvagable here. I'd love some feedback.

  1. Per your Wu Tang Clan quote you need a "seek advantage" move where, if you are not already engaged you can try and create an advantage. This could be moving around and looking for weakness, trying a feint, swinging from the chandelier or whatever else the player may think of.

    1. I'll have to think about that. My favorite rules for something _like_ that was in Exalted (which I played the hell out of) with stunts. Being able to make up a flag pole to catch as you leapt out of the window, or inventing a construction crew's set of tools nearby really let you come up with some crazy visuals.

  2. There is a K6BD RPG, Broken Worlds, created by the author of the comic available on his Patreon. It is PbtA based.

    1. I'm on their Patreon. I've read Broken Worlds. I played a lot of PbtA games back in the day, but don't really enjoy them much anymore.

      It especially doesn't do the "tactical" (whatever that means) play that feels appropriate for kung fu battles.

    2. Its PBTA based, yes, which makes it tremendously unsuited for a combat heavy, tactical game. I really do not know what the hell were they thinking with that game, Im sure the designer tricked the author by telling him that PBTA was really the high shit at the time or whatever. It does some things right, but kung fu games are not one of them. At that point D&D does it much better

    3. Yeah, it is not very tactical. But like his comic, has great flavor for stuff to borrow.

      I like the attack/defend opposition you have. Its a bit simpler than Torchbearer/Mouseguard's rock-paper-scissors "Attack/Defend/Feint/Maneuver" matrix. So helps with ease of picking it up quickly.

      Plus you include the requisite easy to take out "mooks"/unworthy that is a staple of kung fu flicks.

      Including a Defend Move of Block or Absorb Hit, would be trope specific as well. A technique that hits an opponent, but when the dust clears, they stand unscratched.
