Steal this rule microblog: "How do you vanquish this foe?"

Here's a GMing tip. When a combatant reaches 0 HP (or 0 HD in His Majesty the Worm), ask the player who struck the final blow: "How do you vanquish this foe?"

This does three things.

1. It helps share the spotlight! By driving the monster's HD down, players earn the right to narrate what they do to the antagonist. Players will feel cool when they describe a heroic finishing blow.

2. If the monster has a condition to its defeat, this description is important. For example, vampires can only be truly killed in a specific way. If the players fail to fulfill these conditions, the GM can secretly use this information when restocking the Underworld.

By applying this procedure consistently, instead of only when such conditions exist, players don't get an inappropriate tip off that a creature needs a special approach. Smart players will bid lore to learn more about the monsters they're fighting.

3. If the foe the guild is fighting is sentient, this technique lets players define if they want to subdue it instead of kill it. Do they disarm it and let it run away? Tie it up? Knock it out? Not every fight needs to be to the death.
